Western Mail Time for a rethink after partial U-turn

AFTER weeks of pressure, a dramatic announcement came yesterday slashing the potential cuts which were facing Cardiff University.
-
Proposed academic job losses fell from 400 to 286, the institution's Vice Chancellor confirmed in an email at lunchtime.
Professor Wendy Larner also said that alternative proposals for the nursing school, which will see fewer students studying there, were on the table that would see adult, child and mental health nursing retrained, but with less undergraduates recruited.
She revealed 81 staff had taken voluntary redundancy, cutting the headline figure of job losses.
There had, we understand, been significant pressure applied on the university by the Welsh Government; threats of industrial action too were ringing in the ears of the university hierarchy.
