Memorial match for pilot killed in helicopter crash

AN EXHIBITION rugby match is set to be held in memory of Royal Navy pilot Lieutenant Rhodri Leyshon, who tragically lost his life when his helicopter crashed into the English Channel.

The 31-year-old, from Cowbridge, died during an exercise flight last September after the helicopter suffered an apparent power failure, forcing an emergency landing on water.

Two other servicemen were rescued, but Lt Leyshon did not survive.

He was described as “one of the Commando Helicopter Force’s most trusted and highly capable aircraft captains and instructors” and received tributes from Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer.

To honour his memory, friends and Navy colleagues have formed a rugby team in his name, which will take to the pitch at Cardiff Arms Park on the anniversary of his death.

The move is a fitting tribute, given Lt Leyshon’s passion for rugby and his pride in being Welsh.
