Lewis announces she is to leave the WRU women's programme

WALES Women's scrum-half Ffion Lewis has announced she is leaving the Welsh Rugby Union programme after being told her contract will not be renewed at the end of the season.

The 28-year-old - who is part of the Welsh squad for the ongoing Women's Six Nations - was one of 37 players to earn a full-time professional contract from the union last year, but has now suggested that her international career may be over.

However, Bristol Bears star Lewis, who revealed the news on social media on Wednesday, has insisted she will not be retiring as she is "nowhere near done" with rugby.

It comes after an incredibly difficult couple of years for the back, who was ruled out for 20 months with a long-term knee injury suffered during the 2023 Six Nations.

Later that year, Lewis underwent surgery after being diagnosed with severe endometriosis, with her health struggles also coming after she was left without a club following Worcester Warriors' collapse.
