Appeal shows best of humanity

As I reflect, as we always do in December, on the year that has been, I think back on the events that occurred, the stories I've covered, but mainly the people I meet.

Given my day job is politics, the years when my days were spent as a general reporter can feel a long way away.

I can spend all day reading reports or letters now, dealing with press officers or politicians.

But there are still times when the actions of everyday people are the ones that really remind me there is genuine good out there.

It’s three years since I went to my boss incensed at the stories of poverty I'd heard and he asked: “What is it you want to do?”

Since then, every November and December has involved hours of orders, unpacking and sorting gifts.

Aside from the broken nails, tip trips to get rid of cardboard, the box packing and the late nights, it is by far the best thing I get to do in this job.

Knowing we have all helped kids get a Christmas present or a decent meal for Christmas is part of it, but also how it shows me the best of humanity.

As I've watched our GoFundMe page rise to £4,000, there have been donations from colleagues and friends, but also complete strangers. Some giving £5, or £50, some £100.

Some sent notes with Amazon orders saying they wish they could do more.

I read every one, I saw every donation. If I could thank you, I did. If you were an anonymous donor, please consider this my deepest thank-you.

The people I meet in this campaign are just brilliant.
