Tributes to manager of the greatest giant-killing

TRIBUTES have been paid to a West Country football legend who engineered the greatest ever FA Cup giant-killing and went from Somerset to the Spanish capital.

Colin Addison, who has died aged 85, was born in Taunton but enjoyed a globetrotting career as a manager.

His extraordinary career mixed spells at a number of West clubs with those from overseas - including Atletico Madrid.

But it is his exploits in Hereford that he will be best remembered for.

Little more than a corner kick away from Hereford’s Edgar Street home lies Addison Court.

It stands in tribute to his legendary spell in charge of The Bulls.

On February 5, 1972, Hereford and Newcastle met in an FA Cup thirdround replay of classic David and Goliath proportions.

Hereford were a fifth-tier side in the Southern Football League. Newcastle played in the First Division, the top tier, and boasted English football's most feared forward, Malcolm Macdonald.

Bulls player-manager Addison was 31 - he had actually scored in the first tie, a 2-2 draw at St James’ Park - and what happened next on a quagmire of a pitch passed into football folklore.
