A CALMING mural has been unveiled in a police custody suite to help neurodiverse people to not get stressed.

- LORNA HUGHES

The Gloucestershire Police mural, designed by local artist Murmur, features soft colours, abstract patterns and 'tranquil imagery' that all aim to reduce anxiety and over-stimulation in the unusual environment.

It also has targets detainees can use to distract themselves with when playing ball games. Alongside the painted yard, there is now a dedicated quiet cell for people who may find the echoing and noises of the custody suite too much. A picture book that walks a detainee through the types of uniforms and items they may come across within custody has also been created.
