At Risk Register updates put West heritage in focus

Dr Jenner's Hut in the Garden of the Chantry, Berkeley, near Stroud in Gloucestershire, is on Historic England's Heritage At Risk Register

(James Davies)

The register gives an annual snapshot of the health of England’s valued historic buildings and places, helping to ensure they can be protected and continue to be enjoyed in the future.

Among those added to the at risk register are Dr Jenner's Hut in the Garden of the Chantry, Berkeley, near Stroud, which needs restoration and repairs.

Meanwhile the ruins of Gloucester’s St Oswald’s Priory, which was on the register but has been saved this year. While in Barnstaple in North Devon, the Old School Coffee House is among the saved sites.

Turning to the rustic Dr Jenner's Hut, it requires urgent repairs. This tiny hut is one of the most important scientific buildings in the UK, Millions of lives were saved from this building after Dr Edward Jenner performed the first ever vaccinations against smallpox in May 1796.
