THE substitutions of Rob Edwards were once again pivotal as Middlesbrough showed the importance of their squad depth, and their resilience, as they maintained their unbeaten start at Southampton.

After a tricky first half, Boro could have few complaints when Adam Armstrong fired the home side into the lead just after the hour mark.

But with attacking options aplenty, the Boro boss made changes both tactically and to personnel, and with the desired effect.

Kaly Sene scored his second for the club to earn his side a hard-fought point.

Edwards said: "It was a really difficult game. I think you have seen how good they are.

"They are a really good team.

They're in a false position at the moment and they've got a lot of good players."

Boro were very much the makers of their own downfall in a disappointing first half.

Under pressure from the Southampton press from the off, they just seemed to be a bit slow on the ball.
