Singapore Ballet's Cinderella a light-hearted crowd-pleaser

Dancers Kwok Min Yi and Satoru Agetsuma reprised their roles of Cinderella and Prince Magnus from Singapore Ballet's 2023 staging of the ballet.

This version is choreographed and staged by the company’s artistic director Janek Schergen, and was first performed in 2023.Being a familiar fairy tale, it is arguably a challenge to tell the story of Cinderella on stage in a captivating way. This staging does the job generally well, with a bright and lighthearted feel to the overall performance.

Starting with the strong aspects, the set by Eucien Chia stands out with its imposing clock motif that confronts the audiences from the moment they enter the theatre. Effective set changes depict different settings like Cinderella's home, the forest and the grandeur of the palace.

Principal dancer Kwok Min Yi, who plays the role of Cinderella in this performance, has certainly developed over the years into making leading roles her own.
