A long English Premier League season saw many teams crawl over the line, in desperate need of a summer's rest. They included Manchester City, the fallen champions, who needed a final-day win at Fulham to qualify for the Champions League.
While Liverpool, Napoli and Barcelona — champions of England, Italy and Spain — are absent from the tournament, City take their place.
Pep Guardiola, like Paris Saint-Germain coach and former Barca teammate Luis Enrique, has been notable about his ambitions to win the new trophy.
Before the prestige of the fledgling competition is established, there's a total prize fund of US$1 billion (S$1.28 billion) on the table.
If fans stuck at home in Manchester feel left out of this new jamboree played in a different time zone, then that's music to the ears of executives.
