Jail for ex-CNB officer who misappropriated $1,300 from two men

A former Central Narcotics Bureau (CNB) investigation officer (IO) who misappropriated nearly $1,300 in cash from two men following their arrest was sentenced to 13 months’ jail on Nov 14.

He had also forged CNB-issued acknowledgement documents to make it appear as though the two men, referred to as V1 and V2 in court documents, received their belongings at the time they were supposed to get them.

Muhammad Fayyaz Helmi, 29, pleaded guilty in October to one count each of criminal breach of trust, forgery and obstructing the course of justice.

He had committed the offences in 2023 and 2024 when he was working at CNB. After a fellow CNB officer made a police report against him, he resigned in May 2024.

In earlier proceedings, Deputy Public Prosecutor Jheong Siew Yin told the court that Fayyaz was one of the IOs handling 72-year-old V1's case in April 2022.
