In a twist of political fate, the man who once helped end Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto’s military career has now reemerged at the heart of power — this time as his ally.
On Sept 17, retired general Djamari Chaniago, 76, was sworn in as Coordinating Minister for Political and Security Affairs after a Cabinet reshuffle triggered by deadly protests over lawmakers’ perks.
He was also promoted to an honorary four-star general, reinforcing his authority in a Cabinet with several senior officers from the military and police.
Analysts said Mr Djamari’s appointment strengthens Mr Prabowo’s grip on politics and the military, providing stability amid unrest.
Three factors propelled him to the post, they said: his seniority in the military, personal ties to Mr Prabowo and experience in the country’s security circles.
It also helps that he is not seen to have presidential ambitions.
Mr Djamari’s name may seem to have appeared out of nowhere, but he is no stranger to the Indonesian President.
A 1971 National Military Academy graduate, he is three years Mr Prabowo’s senior in the army.
In 1998, as secretary of the Officers’ Honorary Council, which handles cases of misconduct and recommends disciplinary action, Mr Djamari was among those who signed off on Mr Prabowo’s discharge over the alleged abductions of pro-democracy activists. The scandal had implicated Mr Prabowo, who was then the special forces commander.
Despite their history, there appears to be no personal grudge between them.
