History has Gattuso wary of Cup play-offs

October 16, 2025

Gennaro Gattuso said Italy will not underestimate anyone if they have to take part in qualification playoffs for the 2026 World Cup after his team beat Israel 3-0 on Oct 14.

Mateo Retegui netted twice and Gianluca Mancini headed home the third late on as Italy made sure of at least second place in Group I, with only top spot offering automatic qualification for the 2026 Finals in the US, Canada and Mexico.

Italy trail leaders Norway by three points with two games remaining in November. However, the Norwegians have a vastly superior goal difference and will be expected to beat fourth-placed Estonia ahead of their clash with Italy.

Norway, who visit the San Siro in their final group fixture, have a perfect 18 points from their six matches and hammered Italy 3-0 in Oslo in June.
