Golovkin out to land boxing in LA 2028 ring

World Boxing on Sept 26 appointed Gennady Golovkin as the chairman of its new Olympic Commission, charging the former middleweight world champion, 42, with the task of helping the body establish itself as the sport's recognised international federation.

World Boxing, launched in 2023, has 44 members and is looking to fill the void left by the International Boxing Association (IBA).
IBA was stripped of recognition in 2023 by the International Olympic Committee (IOC), which has not included the sport in the 2028 Los Angeles Games programme yet and has urged national boxing federations to create a global boxing body to replace IBA.
Golovkin, once considered the best pound-for-pound boxer in the world and a silver medallist at the 2004 Athens Games, was appointed president of Kazakhstan's National Olympic Committee in 2024.
