For when you've run out of steam and, perhaps, hope

Regardless of how your year has been, this writer suggests some ways to reconcile with it - and to bring clarity to the next one.

- Diane Leow

When it comes to December, no matter how my year has gone, I'm often slightly cheered up by the dazzling lights, the prospect of a few days off, seeing my loved ones, and the generally cooler weather (which, let's face it, really does help lift one's mood).

I will add the caveat that this is partly due to my world view. As a Christian, Christmas does hold a special place in my heart; it is a celebration of the birth of Jesus, without whom, well, there would be no Christianity (though whether or not Jesus was born on Dec 25 is up for debate...and is a story for another time).

I am keenly aware, however, that not everyone finds this time of year hopeful or peaceful. To some, the period leading up to Christmas is about waiting for hope. And for others, the turn of the new year is akin to closing a chapter and starting anew.

However my year has gone, there are a few things that I like to do to wrap it up. In some ways, it is a signal to myself that the year has gone and it should stay in the past. And it is also a reminder that no matter how bleak life seems to be, there is a new year, a new chapter to look forward to.

A WORD FOR YOUR YEAR
