Fed rate cut would be relief to Asia as it deals with tariffs: Asian Development Bank

A long-awaited US interest rate cut would offer welcome relief to Asian economies still grappling with the Trump administration's tariffs, according to Mr Albert Park, chief economist at the Asian Development Bank (ADB).

The Federal Reserve is widely expected to ease monetary policy for the first time in 2025 at its next policy meeting on Sept 16 and 17, after data showed US jobs growth cooled notably in August and unemployment climbed to the highest since 2021. Standard Chartered Bank expects the US central bank to cut interest rates by 50 basis points.
If delivered, a rate cut would be "beneficial for financial conditions in the region", Mr Park said on Sept 8 in an interview in Sydney.
