A compelling tale of family loss and grief

Based on the real experiences of Lebanese choreographer Ali Chahrour's family members, Told By My Mother is an hour-long meditation on the love of a mother.

This work, which premiered in 2021 and is part of Singapore International Festival of Arts 2025, is the second in a series of four performances created by Chahrour on the theme of love.

Told By My Mother contains two main narrative threads. In the first, the audience learns about Chahrour's aunt, Fatmeh, who spent the last troubled years of her life searching for her son Hassan.

The authorities had told her that he had died in Syria, but she refused to believe he was dead. She kept searching until she died from cancer in 2018.
