The flames rose against the evening sky as 14-year-old Sonia Sabar lit her father's funeral pyre. There are no men left in Ramchandrapur, a Sabar village in Ghatsila, East Singhbhum—migration had taken them all.
Her father, 45-year-old Jua Sabar, passed away in the last week of January 2025. He was the last remaining man in the village. His son, Shyamal Sabar, was working in Tamil Nadu and could not return. With no one else to perform the last rites, Sonia stepped forward to do what was traditionally done by men.
Jharkhand's greatest export is not its minerals but its people. From tunneling through Himalayan mountains to laying the foundation of India's metro networks, its migrant workers form the backbone of the country's infrastructure projects.
