India, with its coastline of 11098.81 km and exclusive economic zone of more than 2.3 million sq km, is geographically located and positioned like a maritime bridge between East and West, linking the energy-rich Middle East, the resource-abundant Africa, and the manufacturing hubs of East and Southeast Asia.
Nearly 35-50 per cent of global maritime trade pass through the Indian Ocean, making it a vital artery of global commerce. It offers not only commercial advantage but also an opportunity for geopolitical influence. It allows India to serve as a logistics and transhipment hub, connect global supply chains, and play a stabilising role in the Indo-Pacific security architecture. The Indian Ocean's very name is a reminder of this enduring significance ~ it is the only ocean named after a single country.
