Sonarpur Puja highlights perils of deforestation

In the suburban stretch of Sonarpur, on the southern edge of Kolkata, a community club is using West Bengal's biggest festival to send out a stark warning about one of the gravest challenges of our time-deforestation and its devastating impact on the environment.
For the people of Elachi Ramchandrapur Milon Sangha, Durga Puja has never been just a religious ritual. This year, the organisers are turning the spotlight on an urgent global issue-vanishing forests and the climate crisis that follows their theme "Aranyak" (of the forest).
"Global warming, unchecked urbanisation and large-scale destruction of forests have left us with just 10 per cent forest cover in this region. So our theme is aranyak," explains Soumyadhi Banerjee, one of the organisers.
