Before Taking Part in the Rally Vintage Cars Face Rigorous Prejudging
The Statesman Kolkata
|January 11, 2026
As Kolkata prepares to roll back time once again, the city is set to welcome the return of the Statesman Vintage and Classic car rally, an event that has long stood as a tribute to motoring heritage, craftsmanship and history.
Ahead of the much-awaited rally, a customary prejudging session was organised. This marks the first formal step in celebrating some of the finest surviving examples of automotive excellence.
"The aim is to ensure that each participating vehicle meets the rigorous standards expected of a premier vintage automobile event. This exercise reflects the rally's commitment to authenticity, preservation, and accuracy. Each car is evaluated not just as a showpiece, but as a living artefact of its era."

Whither survival instinct?
It takes decades for one tree to develop a thick bark, an extensive canopy, and a deep system of rootlets within the soil, for mosses and lichens to cover its trunk and bees, birds, insects and so many arboreal mammals to call it their long-term home. How can we wilfully lose such precious ecosystems? Especially when, in some cases, we lose them just for hedonistic gain like fancier furniture or land for real estate. A hundred-year-old tree cannot be substituted by a recently planted sapling (the so-called compensatory reforestation).
