Inspiring artisan careers

SOUTH Africa is facing a massive shortage of artisans — with jobs to be filled but not enough skilled and qualified people to fill them.

More trained artisans are needed to implement strategic infrastructure projects including the building of roads, bridges, schools, harbours, power stations as well as other social and economic infrastructure. Artisans need to be produced locally to avoid having to import these much-needed skills.

Allan Gray Makers is urgently addressing South Africa’s pressing need to double its annual production of artisans. Currently, only 15 000 artisans are trained each year. This is significantly below the 30 000 needed to combat youth unemployment and meet workforce demands. To achieve this goal, at least 60% of school leavers must be encouraged to consider careers in the trades. The initiative therefore aims to inspire young people to pursue these vital professions — securing a sustainable future for the nation’s economy and its youth.
