Ekurhuleni taxi operators halt services
The Star
|August 29, 2025
THE City of Ekurhuleni has denied its involvement in the alleged “harassment” of the South African National Taxi Council (SANTACO) Ekurhuleni taxi operators, whose 10-seater buses are reported to have been targeted by law enforcement agencies in Germiston and Katlehong.
Yesterday, SANTACO, ina statement, said it has halted its operations due to the impounding of vehicles and the “unsustainable R5 000” fines meted out to its members.
SANTACO, through its spokesperson, Zweli Mnisi, said taxi drivers affected by the ongoing impoundment of their 10-seater buses have been forced to pay up to R5 000 for their release.
Mnisi revealed that at the centre of their problem with the municipality are the outdated operating licences that SANTACO members are forced to use, even though these licences are no longer being issued by the relevant authorities.
