Vale were unable to build on the win at Leyton Orient as they suffered a 1-0 home defeat to AFC Wimbledon at Vale Park last night. The club's monumental task of trying to stay in League One took a jolt in a desperately poor match which was decided in the 87th minute - and they now have only 19 games to save themselves.

The Valiants have still only beaten teams at home this season who have started the second half of their matches with 10 men on the pitch.

And incredibly, they have still only won twice in League One since September 27.

Hopes of another victory against a side struggling just above the relegation line had been heightened by the weekend win at Brisbane Road.

But it's back to square one for Jon Brady who still only has one league victory at Vale to his name, with three defeats. Vale also missed a chance to secure league wins back-to-back for the first time since three successive victories against Exeter, Mansfield and Barnsley back in September.

The defeat left them still 10 points adrift of safety.

Vale had concluded their January transfer business 24 hours earlier as former Premier League striker Andre Gray came on board but he was absent here.

A total of eight Vale players left the club in January and five were recruited, as Brady got his wish to reduce the squad in size, the only concern being the amount of experience offloaded against those who have been brought in.
