NOW IS THE TIME TO LOOK AFTER YOUR POND - OR EVEN START BUILDING ONE

- DIARMUID GAVIN

WINTER is the start of the quiet season for ponds, a time of rest as the water cools, the plants die back and sometimes the surface will freeze over.

Life does continue beneath the surface and will emerge again in spring with new shoots of life.

Ponds give wildlife a lifeline - a drink of water for thirsty birds, a place for frogs and newts to hibernate in the mud and an ecosystem for insects.

The addition of water to any garden brings life, light and movement. It doesn’t have to be a big pond either - and you could even think about creating one now while nature is dormant.

A half barrel, an old sink or even a glazed pot can become a miniature watery world.

On a balcony, even a bowl of water or container can become a magnet for thirsty pollinators and curious birds.

The golden rule is to keep it simple. Wildlife prefers quiet still water. Position where it has some sun and shade.
