Plans to remove international student targets
The Sentinel
|January 20, 2026
THE Government will remove targets for international student numbers in the UK, as it focuses on encouraging schools and universities to expand overseas instead.
-
The new International Education Strategy will support UK schools, colleges and universities to deliver their education offering in new countries.
As part of the new strategy, the Government wants education exports from the UK to be worth £40billion a year by the end of the decade.
The new strategy removes previous targets for international student numbers coming to the UK.
It comes after the Government announced the introduction of a levy on international students, which will see universities pay £925 per student each year from 2028/29.
