No inspections at fire-hit Swiss bar for six years

FIRE safety inspections had not been carried out for several years at the bar in Switzerland where a deadly blaze broke out during a New Year's Eve party, Swiss authorities have said.

Investigators have said they believe sparkling candles on champagne bottles ignited the fire at Le Constellation, in the resort of Crans-Montana, when they came too close to the ceiling.

Authorities are looking into whether soundproofing material on the ceiling conformed with regulations and whether the candles were permitted for use in the bar.
