Council proposing to reverse residental road's one-way system

- Jon Bamber

FAMILIES living in a busy residential street have given a mixed reaction to plans to reverse its one-way system.

Vehicles travel up Stanton Road, Meir, to Weston Road. But the city council plans to reverse the system so traffic, including buses, will travel downhill from Weston Road. It also plans to put a bus stop in Stanton Road after Kingsley Street.

Now neighbours have had their say on the scheme.

Adrian Churton, aged 57, said it 'will make it easier getting out at the top.' He added: "I go to work in Leek. The problem is around the Square. There have been some accidents there so they are changing it to make it into a roundabout. The problem is people do not give way."

Charlotte Richards, aged 19, added: "It is a good thing. It will be easier to get out. At the minute I struggle to get on to Weston Road. It will make it safer."

But Martin Tipping, aged 35, strongly opposes the reversal. He said: "Parking is already difficult as it is. This is a very dog-friendly street. Dog owners will have the extra noisy traffic coming down. They are bringing the number six bus route down this street.
