Hundreds pay tribute to city music legend

- Thomas Cooper

HUNDREDS of people celebrated the life of a city music legend in a service at Stoke Minster.

Mike Lloyd died on December 8 while returning home from the US.

The 82-year-old was known for founding the Music Mania record shop, and bringing artists such as ZZ Top to the Potteries as a music promoter and theatre director.

Mr Lloyd was appointed OBE in 2022 for services to classical music, before earning an honorary doctorate in music from the University of Staffordshire in 2023.

He later went on to be named an honorary freeman of Stoke-on-Trent in 2025 for 'an exceptional commitment to enriching the cultural and musical landscape of Stoke-on-Trent.

Rock and country music flooded the church yesterday as mourners lined the pews, with notable figures such as the Lord Mayor and Legendary Lonnie in attendance. The Reverend Geoff Eze began the service paying tribute to Mr Lloyd's achievements.
