Up to 9 properties could be built on fields

- Phil Corrigan

PROPOSALS for up to nine homes on Green Belt land are set to be approved 'in principle.

Robert and Sue Birchall have submitted plans to build six to nine houses on farmland south of Pepper Street in Keele, opposite Seddon Homes' The Oaks development of 100 homes.

Their application, which seeks permission in principle, has been recommended for approval by planning officers at Newcastle Borough Council.

Officers agree with the applicants' claim that the greenfield site meets the definition of 'grey belt,' saying that it makes a weak contribution to the Green Belt and development would therefore be acceptable.

But the application has attracted three letters of objection from residents, who question the need for more housing in the area and say the land should not be considered grey belt.
