Blue plaque to be unveiled in memory of an unsung city hero

A BLUE plaque is set to be unveiled in the town where an 'unsung hero' from Stoke-on-Trent grew up.

John Grocott lived in Heron Street in Fenton and won a scholarship to Guy's Medical school in London while he was excelling at Longton High School.

He returned to Stoke-on-Trent to work at the North Staffs Royal Infirmary which became one of the world's leading centres for plastic surgery, prior to the Second World War - when it was needed like never before.

John took charge of the plastic surgery unit in 1939 - at the age of 29 - and ran it singlehandedly throughout the war, treating thousands of casualties.

John went on to become one of the earliest and best plastic and reconstructive surgeons in the country.
