AS WE enter autumn, readers might well be recalling some of the uplifting local events they have enjoyed over the spring and summer.

Perhaps you patronised the Etruria Canals Festival, the Betley Show or the Chartist Festival in Burslem. However, one other annual event has a glorious pedigree.

The 181st Endon well dressing took place back in May, and though I was unable to attend this year, I’ve attended in the past and regard the event as a wonderful social equaliser and a vibrant community event.

It is to Endon what the Killer Mile is to Mow Cop, the Horn Dance is to Abbots Bromley and Shrovetide football is to Ashbourne - though it may be said to be a little more sedate. Put it another way. A E Bagguley’s little book on the history of the event (circa 1980) asseverated that: “Endon without its well dressing would be like Wimbledon without its tennis or Wembley without its Cup Final.”
