PhilRice to roll out new DNA-tested rice seeds
The Philippine Star
|September 27, 2025
The Philippine Rice Research Institute (PhilRice) is set to distribute rice seeds that have been tested with DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid) to local farmers, the latest measure in the government's efforts to develop the country’s rice sector.
PhilRice said the measure is a key project under the Rice Competitiveness Enhancement Fund Seed Program.
“Each rice variety has a unique DNA fingerprint or genetic sequence that helps researchers distinguish between varieties with nearly identical physical traits, thus avoiding costly misidentification and accidental mixing,” PhilRice scientist Jonathan Niones said.
“If the farmers requested a variety that is suitable for their area but another unfit variety was mixed, their yield would suffer,” Niones said.
