Man wrongly deported to El Salvador faces new charges on return to US

The legal and political battle over Kilmar Ábrego García, 29, has become the most high-profile test of Trump’s immigration policies and the extent of presidential powers to seize and deport immigrants.

The sheet metal worker from Maryland was flown back to the United States on Friday to face charges of transporting undocumented migrants. It was a dramatic turnaround, with Trump previously insisting that he would not bring Ábrego García back and calling him a “bad guy”.

He was returned after US officials presented the government in El Salvador with an arrest warrant. Ábrego García’s lawyers called the new charges against him “preposterous”.
