Iran confirms thousands of protest deaths but blames US

Iran’s supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei confirmed yesterday that the protests in Iran had led to the deaths of “several thousand” people, in the first acknowledgement by the regime of the scale of the casualties.
In a speech broadcast on state television, Khamenei blamed Donald Trump for inciting the protests, which erupted last month over economic hardship. Human rights activists say they have verified more than 3,000 deaths.
Khamenei said the US must be “held accountable” for the unrest. “We consider the US president criminal for the casualties, damages and slander he inflicted on the Iranian nation,” he said, according to Iranian state media.
