Franco-Chinese SVOM satellite begins scanning skies for distant stellar explosions

The SVOM instrument to spot gamma-ray bursts and alert astronomers has commenced operations. SVOM is a collaboration between CNES and CNSA, the national space agencies of France and Russia.

Nine months ago, the Space-based multi-band astronomical Variable Objects Monitor (SVOM) satellite was launched from the Xichang spaceport in China. The mission is a collaboration between China and France, and has two payloads from each country on board. The SVOM mission has now commenced its operational phase, and will be scanning the skies for gamma-ray bursts (GRBs), the most energetic phenomena in the universe. During the commissioning phase itself, the astronomical instrument has detected over 100 gamma-ray bursts, including one from when the universe was only 729 million years
