After a few heartbreaking losses, long-term planning and adapting to conditions led to TN U19 women’s triumph
WHEN the Tamil Nadu U19 women assembled for a camp in Tiruchy in July, they had one goal. Come what may, they had to win a trophy. Last season, they had missed out on qualifying for T20 knockouts based on net run-rate and fell short in the 50-over semifinals. In 2022-23, TN got eliminated in the pre-quarters stage in one-dayers.
So, this time, they did not want another heartbreak but win the state a trophy. Last week, the dream came true as the B Jenitha-led Tamil Nadu beat Uttar Pradesh in a low-scoring final to win their first-ever U19 T20 title at the Chaudhary Bansi Lal Cricket Stadium, Lahli, Haryana. "It is a very proud moment for all of us, not just the team, but also for Tamil Nadu Cricket Association and everyone is very proud of this achievement," says Bobby Gulecha, coach of the U19 team.
"It's been a long-awaited cup. We are very happy to have it. A lot of credit goes to the girls for the hard work they put in and the association for backing up at all stages. And a special mention to the support staff. We work together as a team and we can see the results here. This cup is like a script from God for us. God has guided us through to the cup," an elated Bobby adds.
