KAPIL Sibal caught the nation's attention in 1993 with his six-hour-long address in a packed Lok Sabha against Justice V Ramaswamy impeachment motion.
His eloquence and meticulous deconstruction of the prosecution's arguments along with masterful crossexamination and compelling defence that raised questions about legal principles ultimately won an unexpected relief for his client. The Ramaswamy trial showcased Sibal's legal prowess and placed him in the pantheon of India's top legal luminaries. He has not looked back since.
Sibal's family hails from Lahore. His father came to India during Partition, leaving everything behind. His maternal grandparents lost their lives in the violence that followed the Partition. After his post-graduation from St Stephens College, Sibal was persuaded by his Professor Bipin Chandra to take up academics. Sibal taught history in Hindu College for two years where Union minister Hardeep Singh Puri was among his students.
