THE Tamil Nadu government has notified The TN Private Universities (Amendment) Act, 2024, in the Government Gazette.
The Bill passed by the Assembly in 2023, received the assent of Governor R N Ravi on April 9, one day after the Supreme Court held that the governor withholding 10 state legislative bills, passed by the TN Assembly, was "illegal" and "erroneous".
The Act amends the TN Private Universities Act, 2019, to include eight private universities in the schedule, in line with the University Grants Commission (UGC) norms. These private universities had not received the mandatory UGC approval as they failed to fulfill the requirement.
According to the UGC norms, a state must establish a university, be it state-run or private, through a separate Act or proper amendment to the existing TN State Private Universities Act, 2019, and not through a mere notification. Hence, the amendment was necessary to safeguard the future of students studying in these private institutions.
