Inspection Based on Plea Accusing Tanneries, Civic Bodies of Discharging Untreated Waste into River
A Supreme Court-appointed committee, headed by retired Madras High Court judge Justice M Sathyanarayanan, conducted a preliminary inspection in Ranipet on Thursday to assess the extent of pollution in the Palar River, allegedly caused by untreated effluents from leather industries and sewage discharged by local bodies.
The visit stems from a 2019 petition filed by the Vellore Environmental Monitoring Organisation, which accused tanneries and municipal bodies of discharging hazardous waste into the river, leading to severe environmental degradation. The petition sought a thorough investigation, ecological restoration of the river, and compensation for affected farmers.
