IN AN UNUSUAL case that tested both patience and perseverance, police officers in Alathur police station have finally recovered a gold chain that had been swallowed by a thief -- after three long days of round-the-clock watch and special care.
The incident occurred on Sunday night around 7.30 pm during a local fair in Melarcode, when Muthappan (32), a native of Chinthamani of Madurai district in Tamil Nadu, snatched a gold chain from the two-year-old daughter of Kaduchira Veettil Vinod, a Pattanchery native, and shockingly swallowed it in a desperate attempt to hide the evidence. The girl's grandmother raised an alarm, and the quick-thinking locals managed to apprehend the thief. However, a thorough search revealed nothing as the chain had vanished.
