Relocate elephants from Kodagu to Bheemanakatte dam area

"THE government must take steps to relocate conflict wild elephants from Kodagu to Bheemanakatte dam area," demanded Col Cheppudira P Muthanna (Retd), president of Environment and Health Foundation.

He was speaking at a press conference in Madikeri highlighting the need to immediately address the escalating issue of wildlife conflict in the district.

"The government needs to formulate a plan to relocate 200 wild elephants that are living in the estates of Kodagu to suitable places with food and water. Steps need to be taken to ensure that these relocated elephants do not leave this sanctuary. They can be relocated to the Bheemanakatte region where there are enough resources," he added.

He said earlier elephants used to attack humans at night in Kodagu. "But now elephants are attacking humans even in the early morning hours. In the last 2 months, 4 people have lost their lives to elephant attacks in the district," he said.
