20k-tonne shortfall in paddy procurement target as farmers prefer traders to DPCs

WITH harvesting left to be completed only on about 50 hectares, kuruvai season in the district is drawing to a close. The paddy procurement by direct purchase centres (DPCs), however, has fallen short of the target by around 20,000 tonnes, official data show.
Farmers' preference to sell their harvest to private traders over DPCs is blamed for the target shortfall.
During the 2024 kuruvai season, paddy was cultivated on 61,800 hectares in the district, of which harvesting is over in 61,750 hectares so far, Agriculture and Farmers Welfare Department officials said. Meanwhile, the Tamil Nadu Civil Supplies Corporation (TNCSC), which set a procurement target of 1.5 lakh tonnes, has so far procured 1.27 lakh tonnes of the seasonal paddy through the DPCs.
