Telangana HC acquits colonel in rape case

A division bench of the Telangana High Court, comprising Justice P Sam Koshy and Justice N Tukaramji, has acquitted Colonel Rishi Sharma in a high-profile rape case.
The bench found critical inconsistencies and lack of credible evidence and set aside the earlier judgment under Section 376(2)(f)(n) and Section 506 of the IPC by a special fast-track court.
Colonel Sharma was convicted by the fast-track court in 2024 for allegedly raping a woman under his guardianship and was sentenced to life imprisonment. The victim, daughter of his close friend, accused him of coercing her into sexual acts in January 2017 while her mother was away on an official tour.
