Vaccinated 5-yr-old Malappuram girl dies of rabies

A FIVE-year-old girl from Peruvallur in Malappuram succumbed to rabies at the Kozhikode Government Medical College Hospital (MCH) early Tuesday morning, despite receiving timely vaccination and treatment as per medical protocol.

Ziya Faris, daughter of Salmanul Faris, passed away at 1.45 am after a week-long battle in critical care.

Ziya was bitten by a stray dog on March 29. The attack was severe, with deep wounds inflicted on her head, leg, shoulder, and lip injuries categorized as "category three" bites by doctors. She was rushed to the Tirurangadi Taluk Hospital, where she was administered IDRV (intradermal rabies vaccine). She also received rabies immunoglobulin at the Kozhikode MCH, the standard protocol for such high-risk cases.
