EIGHT major municipal corporations in Gujarat controlling over ₹2 lakh crore of public money have not been audited for 4 to 7 years, a government reply to an RTI query says, exposing collapse of accountability.
The RTI has blown the lid off years of silence, revealing how legal mandates were ignored, Assembly oversight was bypassed, and people were kept in the dark about how their money was spent. The accounts of eight municipal corporations in Ahmedabad, Gandhinagar, Rajkot, Jamnagar, Bhavnagar, Junagadh, Surat and Vadodara have not been audited for several years, reveals the RTI reply from the Director of the Local Fund Accounts Office. Ahmedabad, Surat and Vadodara have not seen a single audit since 2017-18.
