Pollution of Meenachil River Poses Threat to Drinking Water Projects

AS THE district has begun to experience sweltering summer temperatures and a decrease in water flow to rivers, the Meenachil river, one of the major sources of drinking water in the district, is facing a looming threat of severe pollution.
A study conducted by the Tropical Institute of Ecological Sciences (TIES), a Kottayam-based environmental research institution, has found that the level of faecal coliform bacteria is several times higher than its permissible level across the river.
