SCOLIOSIS, a medical condition characterised by an abnormal lateral curvature of the spine, affects lakhs of individuals worldwide. While it can develop at any age, it is most commonly diagnosed during adolescence. Despite its prevalence, scoliosis remains a condition that many are unaware of, often leading to delayed diagnosis and treatment.
What is scoliosis?
Scoliosis involves a sideways curvature of the spine, which can be shaped like a 'C' or an 'S'. The severity of the curvature can vary significantly from person to person. In mild cases, it may cause little to no discomfort, but in more severe instances, it can lead to pain, physical deformity, and even respiratory issues.
Causes and risk factors
The exact cause of scoliosis remains unknown in many cases, classified as idiopathic scoliosis. However, it can also result from congenital spine defects, neuromuscular conditions, or as a secondary effect of other medical issues.
