RECEIVING an autism diagnosis can be a pivotal moment for many families.

- JOSEPH SUNNY KUNNASSERY

For some, it may even feel like a dead end. Understanding what to expect and how to best support a child with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is essential.

Children diagnosed with ASD often show signs of impaired social attention by the age of one. These early indicators may include limited eye contact, a lack of response to speech, decreased engagement with play or social interaction, reduced smiling, and difficulty connecting with others.

Even behaviors such as not responding to their own name may suggest the need for further evaluation, though it's important to note that these signs alone do not definitively indicate ASD.

Challenges in diagnosing autism Diagnosing autism in children under the age of three presents several challenges due to the complexity of early development and the variability in symptoms. Developmental milestones can vary significantly from child to child, making it difficult to differentiate between a temporary delay and a more persistent concern.
