Dehradun's bustling Kumhar Mandi

- NARENDRA SETHI @ Dehradun

DIWALI preparations are in full swing across India, but nowhere more visible than in Dehradun's historic Kumhar Mandi.

For over seven decades, this Potters' Market has been the centre for traditional clay 'diyas' and idols of Goddess Lakshmi and Lord Ganesha. Potters are working overtime to meet the growing demand for these handcrafted items.

Many artisans begin their preparations nearly six months in advance, carefully shaping clay into lamps and idols that will soon adorn homes across the city. This year, the market is bustling with freshly molded, colorful 'diyas' designed to capture the festive spirit. Both the Union and State governments have been encouraging people to buy locally made, indigenous products for Diwali, which has increased demand.
